What's a pre-screen checklist? How should I use it?
Pre-screen checklists are a great way to start building kids' executive functions by reminding them to complete family or personal tasks before starting screen time for the day.
How do I create one?
- In the Screenable parent app, go to your kid's settings.
- Tap Pre-screen checklist and create your own list. You can add up to 5.
What are best practices?
Firstly, it's always best to do this with your kids. Make sure they know and agree to the daily tasks they must complete before screen time, and also that they'll see the checklist before each day's screen time, or they're likely to blow past the checklist without thinking.
Next, add only the truly mandatory ones. If you add "1 hour of piano practice" aspirationally, in hopes that it will magically cause them to start practicing more, you will probably be disappointed.
Here are common ones we see:
- Today's chores (or list key chores separately)
- Today's homework
- Ask Mom or Dad (if that's the rule in your home, before device use)
- Musical instrument practice
- Language/academic subject practice
- Other healthy daily practice (maybe exercise or nutrition-related)
How can I give feedback on this feature?
This feature is still in development and we would love to hear what you think! What is working and what is not? Should it be more heavy-handed, requiring checking individual boxes? Should it record a history of answers? What else? Let us know – thank you!
