What Apple kid & device settings should I use?

Screenable allows parents to control low-level settings on their kid's iPhone or iPad, so you don't have to wade through a million settings to find what you need. Note that these settings apply to all the devices a given kid uses.

How do I change these settings in Screenable?

  1. Open the Screenable parent app, then tap your kid.
  2. Tap the ⚙ (gear) in the upper-right, then tap Apple's kid settings.

Which iOS/iPadOS device settings should I use?

Screenable provides access to the most important device settings for managing kids devices. We generally recommend keeping all of these OFF, to avoid both accidental changes and also the temptation of trying to get around screen-time limits. 😉

  • Allow editing Apple account - This allows kids to change their iCloud accounts, such as their name and birthday. Generally keep this off unless there's a good reason to give them access.
  • Allow changing passcode - Keep this off to ensure that you have access to your kid's device through their passcode. At a certain age and trust level, you might turn this back on.
  • Allow changing date/time - Keep this off if you suspect your kid might get a little sneaky and try to get around schedule-based screen time limits (e.g. by changing the time so it doesn't look like it's bedtime).
  • Allow deleting apps - Deleting apps can disrupt tracking and reporting for kids' app usage, sometimes even appearing as though the deleted apps weren't used at all, so it's best to keep this off if you believe your kid might be trying to get around the rules. (Also, if you've decided not to use a kid iCloud account on their device, it prevents the main easy workaround – i.e. deleting the Screenable app itself. With that said, it's a little annoying not to be able to delete apps, so use your best judgment.
